Post subject:  Multi-partitioned HDD, safely remove [SOLVED]

I have a new mains-powered external USB HDD with 3 partitions (all for data only)
- unit is NOT off the shelf external HDD ... separate enclosure -PLUS- WD Blue 500GB disc
- disc-enclosure is USB3 but all laptop ports are USB2 only
- all partitions are NTFS

USB Safely Remove lists all 3 partitions as separate drives (obviously).
- to disconnect the HDD I safely-remove the first partition/drive and then pull the plug
- the HDD is intentionally empty until I am sure of procedures to USB Safely Remove the device.

Thank you,

USB Safely Remove has been the one of the best purchases I have ever made. :D
- worth every cent/penny/dollar
- Windows Safely Remove is frustrating when multiple USB sticks and all that is shown are drive letters

bawldiggle,
Thanks for your nice words!

I'm not sure I understand what's your question or problem. What behavior of the program are you expecting?

My experience has only ever been with USB thumb-drives and USB pocket drives.
In USB Safely Remove each device has only been one drive .
- so safely removing has only been represented by one drive letter.

Now I have a new external USB HDD, with 3 partitions
- one primary partition and two logical partitions.
- ie, drive letters J, K, L

When I open USB Safely Remove all three drives ... J, K, L are listed for safe removal
- but all those drives (J, K, L) are on one HDD device

How do I ensure a safe removal of the new HDD device if only one drive (partition) is "released"
- or should I safely release all drives/partitions on the HDD before disconnecting the HDD device from the USB port.

What you describe makes no sense to me. If you click on the drive symbol to the left all 'partitions' are ejected. IMHO it is not possible to eject only one partition - always the whole drive. Did you ever try this?

bawldiggle,
Thanks for the explanation of the issue. Can you send me the following additional information:
1. The report from the program. In order to send the report you should proceed to "Main menu -> Help -> Report a bug", and in the opened dialog enter your e-mail, the link to this topic.
2. The screenshot of the device menu with the drive split into three devices. Please highlight these devices or just list their drive letters.

The left of "what" ?
The only active "links" in the USB Safely Remove popup window are the partition/drive labels, and I can only click them one at a time.
There is no clickable "item" that represents the device, only the multiple partitions on the device are clickable.

I think I might have discovered part of the answer to my question
- when I clicked on one of the drives the "released" popup lists all drives/partitions on the storage device
- in this case E and F

Does USB Safely Remove check the status of all drives/partitions on the device ... or only the "clicked" drive/partition ?
- eg, if I clicked on E and F was still be written too, would USB Safely Remove detect F is still being written to ?

bawldiggle,
Thanks for thorough explanation!

When you click to any drive of such multipartitioned disk the whole device will be safely removed. So there's no difference where to click to remove the device: to a drive item or to a device (e.g. to the device caption). But things different for devices with media such as card-reader, DVD-ROMs etc. For this devices clicking to the drive will either eject a partial card or DVD tray while clicking to the device will prepare the whole device to be removed.

@ Techland :)

I owe you an apology

Just discovered the device icon is "alive".
- I had assumed the device-icon would behave the same as partition/drive when pointed to.
- change of appearance (and the green magnifier shows) when pointed to

When I click the device icon "to the left" USB-Safely Remove does start the eject process
- you were right

Thank you for your advice :)
