Start with Windows? Resource usage? Vista feature replaced?

Post by emarell »

Running Vista w/SP 2, 32-bit.

I just began using USB Safely Remove 4.7.1.1153 - seems to do an excellent job. My USB hard drive, used a few times a week, is a Western Digital 500 GB. It's always been troublesome to disconnect before. Vista's built-in, Safely Remove Hardware, almost never succeeded with this particular external hard drive. Not a complaint unique to me, of course. Unlock sometimes worked, and another 3rd party software pretty much failed.

To my untrained eye, according to the task manager it seems as if USB Safely Remove uses resources sparingly. That's compared with, say, Firefox, explorer.exe, or Avast. So allowing USB Safely Remove to always run wouldn't be slowing things down noticeably - is that a reasonable expectation?

If not, I'd rather not choose the 'Run on Windows startup' option. (Currently the option is on.)

Vista's Safely Remove Hardware icon has vanished from the system tray. It's not hidden; it's just not there. So has Safely Remove Hardware been replaced? Disabled? Is there something further I should do about this unreliable built-in?

Hi emarell,
Welcome to our forums!

Yes, that's correct. USB Safely Remove does nothing unless you operate with hardware.

If you mean that the native icon was never displayed on your system before the installation of USB Safely Remove then there are no solution. Either stop the devices using our program or by making a shortcut to it with the following command: "C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll"

If you mean that it's disappeared after installation of USB Safely Remove then it's a correct behavior. By default USB Safely Remove hides the the native SRH icon. If you need to see it as well as USBSR icon, you can uncheck the option Options -> Look and Feel -> Replace native "safely remove hardware" icon.

Thank you, Igor, for the explanations.

So far - a few days in - USB Safely Remove has not exhibited a slowdown.

I did mean the Safely Remove Hardware icon was originally visible but disappeared after USB Safely Remove was installed. (Fine with me! Had I looked more thoroughly and discovered the Options checkbox you mention, my question would have been clearer... apologies.)

I still wonder: I'd guess the answer is yes, but if I were to uninstall USB Safely Remove, would the native icon reappear?

Sure. We try to do our best in restoring of all the changes that we made in the system, such as the mentioned icon, removed empty slots of card readers and etc.
